“lt was Christmas day 2006 when I met Dr. Richard Crowley’s brother, John Paul Crowley,
at Flagg Creek Country Club where I am the golf pro. He handed me his brothers book
entitled Mentalball, Beat You Invisible Opponent at Its Own Game. Although it was
a book about Crowley’s unique method helping some 43 amateur and professional baseball
players overcome their personal demons, I was surprised at the parallels with golf.
It could not have been better timing as I was confused as to what to do with pursing the senior tour. I had a lot of issues that only showed up during competitions. He told me to contact his brother and I did. Dr. Crowley and I began to go after my invisible opponent.
Following our work together, I won the 2007 Senior Match Play Championship of Illinois.
However, during other matches I would find myself coming in second or third place.
“Not to matter,”’ Dr. Crowley said, “Those struggles are only coming from patterns
that up until know have been running you.” He went on to say, “Remember You are bigger
than any of your patterns.” And that belief has stuck with me. My other favorite
thing I remind myself when I am struggling is that “Champions are made not how they
start, but how they finish.”
